Tournament Bubble Strategy
On the bubble, the same cards and stack can require a different decision because of coverage and payouts.

The bubble is more than one player from the money
The bubble is a stage where the next elimination misses a payout or a meaningful pay jump. Chip value is no longer linear: losing chips and busting can cost more prize equity than winning the same chips adds.
What risk premium means
Risk premium is the extra equity required before accepting an all-in that can eliminate you. It is often largest between similarly sized stacks. A covering big stack and a short stack close to being blinded out face very different incentives.
Basic roles by stack
These roles are relative to the table and payout structure, not determined by chip count alone.
Big-stack approach
- Increase late-position opens when medium stacks are protecting survival equity.
- Covered opponents may need to call much tighter than in chip-EV play.
- Avoid thin, high-variance collisions with another big stack that can remove your leverage.
- Do not call short-stack shoves automatically; their doubling range and your required equity are separate questions.
Medium-stack approach
- Medium stacks often experience the strongest bubble pressure.
- When a much shorter stack is near elimination, marginal confrontations with a covering big stack lose value.
- Folding every hand eventually turns you into the short stack, so use unopened pots and opponents you cover.
- Before opening, identify which players cover you and which players cannot call your shove comfortably.
Short-stack approach
A short stack should not always wait simply because cashing looks close. You may need to act before the next blinds and antes erase your fold equity.
- Count the hands until the big blind reaches you.
- Check whether shorter stacks exist at other tables and how fast the structure moves.
- Include both showdown equity and the probability everyone folds.
- Satellite bubbles can require far tighter play than ordinary multi-table tournaments.
Why calling ranges matter most
A shove can win uncontested, but a call has no fold equity. For that reason, bubble calling ranges often contract more than shoving ranges.
Satellites are a different game
When every survivor receives the same seat, extra chips lose value sharply. A stack that is already safe may need to avoid a huge all-in even with a premium hand.
- The goal is a seat, not first place.
- A safe stack has little reason to collide with another large stack.
- Seats remaining, short stacks, and blind speed can matter more than absolute hand strength.
Bubble checklist
Key takeaway
Big stacks apply pressure but avoid peer collisions; medium stacks use short-stack leverage; short stacks act before fold equity vanishes.
