Playing 5BB, 10BB, and 15BB
Short stack is not one category. Separate the branches that disappear at 5BB from those still available at 15BB.

Not all short stacks are the same
Five, ten, and fifteen big blinds are all short, but they allow different action trees. The key inputs are effective stack, position, antes, and prior action, not merely your displayed total.
Stack-depth comparison
5BB: little time and fold equity
At 5BB, one orbit of blinds and antes consumes a large share of the stack. Waiting repeatedly for a premium hand can make the next shove easier for opponents to call.
- Prioritize open-shove opportunities by position.
- There is little room to raise small and then fold, so size carefully.
- Calling to see a flop often creates a pot nearly as large as the remaining stack.
- The value of acting now increases when the big blind is approaching or antes are large.
10BB: the center of push-fold play
Open shoving is common at 10BB, but every hand does not have to be shove or fold. Position, opponents, and ICM can support selected small opens with strong hands or carefully chosen bluffs.
- Late-position steals gain value when the blinds overfold.
- Look for 3-bet shoves against players who open wide and can fold.
- Before min-raising, decide which opponents and shoves you can continue against.
- Calling an open produces a very low flop SPR and fast commitment decisions.
15BB: more branches remain
At 15BB, you can min-raise/fold, raise/call for value, reshove, and play selected postflop pots. Shoving every hand immediately can sacrifice value with strong holdings and take unnecessary risk with weak ones.
- Use small opens from the cutoff and button to pressure blinds.
- Build reshove ranges from the opener’s range and fold frequency.
- Call selectively when position and equity realization are favorable.
- Plan commitment preflop because stacks are still shallow after the flop.
Position changes the plan
Antes and orbit cost
A big-blind ante adds dead money and increases the reward for winning uncontested. It also raises the cost of waiting an orbit, so passive waiting deteriorates quickly at 5BB and 10BB.
Along with current BB, count hands until the next blind and estimate the stack you will have after another orbit.
Common mistakes by depth
Decision routine
- Convert the effective stack into big blinds.
- Check position, players behind, and ante structure.
- Identify unopened, versus-open, or versus-shove action.
- List the branches available at 5BB, 10BB, or 15BB.
- Adjust a push-fold baseline for ICM and opponent tendencies.
Key takeaway
Never let stack depth alone decide—include position, antes, prior action, and ICM.
