How to Read Push-Fold Charts
Before locating a hand, identify the decision the chart solves. Start by separating open-shove, call, and reshove ranges.

Five checks before the chart
- Effective stack in BB: use the smaller stack between you and the relevant opponent.
- Your position: UTG, cutoff, button, and small blind have different players left to act.
- Table size: the same position label can represent a different relative seat in six-max and nine-max.
- Antes: more dead money changes the reward for winning uncontested.
- Action type: open-shove, reshove over a raise, and call-versus-shove ranges are different charts.
Reading a 13×13 matrix
Rows and columns run from ace to deuce. The diagonal contains pocket pairs. Most charts place suited hands above the diagonal and offsuit hands below it, but always verify the legend because layouts can differ.
Open-shove charts
Use these when action folds to you in an unopened pot and you move all in. With fewer players behind, fold equity generally increases and the baseline range can widen.
- UTG requires a stronger range because many players remain.
- The button and small blind can attack fewer remaining opponents.
- Adjust when a blind is extremely short or calls much wider than the model assumes.
Call and reshove charts
When calling a shove, you have no fold equity and can lose your stack, so calling ranges are often much tighter than open-shoving ranges at the same depth.
A reshove chart applies after someone has opened. Include the opener’s position and sizing, players behind, and the range with which the opener will call your shove.
Example: 10BB button, unopened
After action folds to the button with a 10BB effective stack, find the chart matching 10BB, BTN, ante condition, and open shove. Even if A8s appears in the shove region, check:
- Do the blinds call wider than the model?
- Is a covering big stack behind?
- Is this a bubble or major pay jump?
- Could a small open produce more value with manageable postflop play?
How ICM changes ranges
Chip-EV charts often treat each chip as linearly valuable. On bubbles and final tables, elimination cost can make calling ranges significantly tighter.
Conversely, a covering big stack may shove wider into medium stacks that must overfold. A chart without payout and stack-distribution inputs cannot fully solve an ICM decision.
Opponent adjustments
A chart-use routine
- Describe the spot as stack BB, table size, position, ante, and prior action.
- Choose a chart for exactly that action type.
- Locate the baseline action for the hand.
- Adjust for ICM, stack distribution, and calling tendencies.
- Review borderline hands by checking assumptions rather than one result.
Key takeaway
Match effective stack, position, table size, ante, and action type, then adjust for ICM and opponents.
