How to Count Outs

Accurate out counting requires more than card totals: account for opposing ranges, duplicates, and redraws.

What is an out?

An out is an unseen card that can improve an incomplete or currently losing hand into one that has a realistic chance to win. A card is not a true out merely because it improves your hand category; it must work against the opponent’s plausible range.

Count clean outs. If the card also makes a stronger opponent hand or still leaves you behind, it is not a full out.

Common draws

SituationBase outsMain caution
Flush draw9Higher flushes and board-pair redraws
Open-ended straight draw8Flush cards and higher-straight possibilities
Gutshot4Only one rank completes the straight
Two overcardsUp to 6Many outs are dirty against pairs, kickers, and two-pair redraws
One pair to trips/two pairUp to 5Some cards may not produce the best hand

Exact probability

On the flop, 47 cards are unseen after accounting for your two hole cards and the three board cards. On the turn, 46 cards remain unseen.

Chance on the next cardOuts ÷ unseen cards
Chance to hit by the river from the flop1 − ((47−outs) ÷ 47) × ((46−outs) ÷ 46)

The rule of 2 and 4

For a fast estimate, multiply outs by 2 when one card remains and by 4 when you are on the flop and will see both turn and river. This is an approximation, not the exact formula.

9 outsabout 18% / 36%one card / two cards
8 outsabout 16% / 32%one card / two cards
4 outsabout 8% / 16%one card / two cards

The exact values for nine outs are roughly 19.1% on one card and 35.0% across two cards. Simple multiplication becomes less accurate with very large numbers of outs.

Remove duplicate outs

When you hold both a flush draw and a straight draw, cards that complete both draws must be counted only once.

If you have nine flush outs and eight open-ended straight outs, but two straight cards are also flush cards, the total is 9 + 8 − 2 = 15 outs.

Dirty and partial outs

  • Low flush: a suit card may complete your flush while giving an opponent a higher one.
  • Paired board: your straight or flush can lose to a full house.
  • Overcards: an ace or king can still lose to two pair or a stronger kicker.
  • Split outcomes: a card that puts a straight on the board may win only a fraction of the pot.
When an out is uncertain, discounting it to a partial out can produce a more conservative estimate. This is a practical risk adjustment rather than an exact combinatorial rule.

Example: calling with a flush draw

Assume nine clean flush outs on the flop and an all-in decision that guarantees seeing both remaining cards. The draw completes about 35% of the time. If the pot price requires 25% equity, the direct price can support a call.

If the opponent holds a set, the board can pair, or your flush is low, actual equity may be lower than a simple nine-out estimate.

A reliable counting process

  1. Assign the opponent a plausible range.
  2. Decide whether you are already ahead or need to improve.
  3. List all candidate improving cards.
  4. Remove duplicate cards.
  5. Discount or remove cards that also improve the opponent.
  6. Convert the clean total into a probability and compare it with pot odds.

Key takeaway

An out is not merely a card that improves your hand—it must improve you effectively against the opposing range.

Remove duplicates and dirty cards, then use exact probability or the rule of 2 and 4 for a quick estimate.
